The IAAF Council held its first meeting of the year this week and Council members were pleased to learn that a total of 4,080 signatures have been collected via the IAAF’s e-petitions on the government website. However they still expressed their wish to see a major increase in support for the Federation’s MoT petition.
The IAAF relaunched its e-petition on the government’s petition website after the original petition had been disabled. Federation chief executive Brian Spratt has asked IAAF members to keep adding their names to the 3120 that were on the original petition, and to get their families and friends to sign up as well. (Click HERE to sign the e-petition). So far, 860 have signed up to the new version so, added to the original e-petition signatures, there are now a total of 4,080.
“This is such a serious issue, both for the industry and for road safety,” said IAAF President Nick Best. “We really can’t afford to be apathetic. I, and my fellow IAAF Council Members, are sure that a large demonstration of support for the Federation’s opposition to the government’s proposal to relax MoT frequency would have a huge impact on government thinking.”
“We saw last month that the ‘FairFuelUK’ campaign managed to get the topic of fuel prices debated in the Commons as a result of them gathering over 100,000 supporting signatures on their e-petition; and the government changed its policies” Nick Best said. “There’s no reason at all that the motor trade and other bodies interested in road safety and the environment couldn’t do the same. We just need everyone to get onto the e-petition site, and not leave it to everyone else!”
If you signed the original petition, there’s nothing to stop you from signing the new one as well. But everyone should note that the government site will send you an email which includes a link to confirm your signature. If you don’t complete this second phase then your support will not be registered.
