Private Buyers Leave Car Market

Fleet sales rebounded in June with registrations totalling 100,250 - up 25.3% on the volume recorded a year earlier (80,016), whilst business volumes rose 18.4% year-on-year to 10,516 (June 2009: 8,883). Meanwhile, private sector new car demand was almost unchanged with registrations in June totalling 84,460 - down 3.3% on a year ago (87,365) - as consumer confidence waned following the ending of the scrappage incentive scheme.

No More Scrappage

Business Secretary Vince Cable has told motor industry executives that car-buying incentives such as the scrappage scheme are not the way to stimulate the car market. When asked about the scrappage scheme, Dr. Cable said, “It got us out of an acute stage in the economic crisis, but it was too expensive to run. We are emerging from a period of Government intervention. We are now in a different world. The Government can't fight and win a subsidy war. We are now in a different era.
